System Modelling and Load Flow Assessment

Short Circuit & Motor Start-up Investigations

  • Short Circuit Analysis
    • Overview of IEEE and IEC standards regarding fault computations.
    • Examining 3-phase, Line-to-Ground, Line-to-Line, and Double Line-to-Ground faults.
    • Assessing the Duty and Breaking capacity of Circuit Breakers.
  • Motor Start-up Analysis
    • Simulating Static vs. Dynamic motor start-up scenarios.
    • Evaluating the effect of "Voltage Dip" on the broader system during motor acceleration.
    • Application: Contrasting "Direct-on-Line" (DOL) starting against Star-Delta or VFD start-up techniques within the simulation framework.

Protection Coordination & Network Simulation

  • Protective Device Coordination (Star View)
    • Overview of the ETAP Star (Protection & Coordination) module.
    • Incorporating Overcurrent (50/51) and Ground Fault (50N/51N) relays.
    • Generating Time-Current Characteristic (TCC) curves.
  • Selectivity and Discrimination
    • Calibrating relay settings to guarantee that only the faulty section is disconnected.
    • Checking transformer damage curves and cable thermal limits.
  • Practical Workshop: Distribution Network Simulation
    • Capstone Project: Constructing a standard distribution network from the ground up.
